In our recent English B HL class, DP1 students explored Oxford University Press’s ‘Words of the Year’, reflecting on how language evolves with society. By creating posters for the chosen words, they demonstrated the knowledgeable learner profile, diving into the political, technological and cultural forces that shape the words we use and their meanings in that particular year.
This year’s Word of the Year, BRAIN ROT, is a powerful example.
Originally used by Henry David Thoreau in 1854 to describe intellectual decline, it now highlights the impact of overconsuming trivial online content. Today, the term sparks global discussions about balancing our digital lives which is a topic especially relevant to younger generations. Exploring such words helps us deepen our understanding of how language shapes the world and how we, as global citizens, can use it thoughtfully.
